Thruway Is Open In Western New York

Buffalo, N.Y. - A blizzard warning for western New York has expired and a 130-mile stretch of the Thruway has reopened, but many schools from Buffalo to the North Country remain closed because of arctic conditions.

The National Weather Service's first extended blizzard warning for the Buffalo area in 20 years was lifted at 6 a.m. Wednesday, two days after the storm barreled in with snow and high winds that impacted an area from the state's southwest corner to the Canadian border in northern New York.

The weather service says the storm dumped up to 18 inches in the Buffalo area and 27 inches east of Lake Ontario.

With temperatures in the single digits, many schools from western New York to Watertown remain closed for a second day or are opening two hours late.
