Settlement Reached In Harassment Lawsuit

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ The New York Attorney General's Office has reported settling a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment of female students at the Simmons Institute of Funeral Services in Syracuse.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says the settlement with the for-profit school and chief executive Maurice Wightman includes $30,000 in restitution to students and employees who filed complaints.

The Civil Rights Bureau investigation and lawsuit filed in 2011 followed complaints that school policy unnecessarily barred pregnant teachers and students from certain activities. It also alleged that Wightman subjected students to unwanted comments and touching.

In the settlement agreement, Wightman and the school denied the allegations.

The school's website says the mortuary school will close after teaching its current students.
