Route 690 Work Begins

Work has begun on a section of Interstate 690 through downtown Syracuse to rebuild some bridge decks, which will cause plenty of traffic headaches for commuters.

The Department of Transportation says the work will take at least two weeks to complete and the contractor will be working around the clock to get the work done.

The DOT is targeting bridge decks on 690 Westbound over Salina Street and Onondaga Creek and the contractor is using pre-cast bridge decks, to shorten the time needed for replacement. Otherwise, the project handled through normal construction might have taken 12 weeks to finish.

DOT spokesman Gene Cilento says drivers should make plans for alternate routes during the period of construction and suggest routes 20, 31 and 173 might be preferrable routes instead, although detour signs will be posted as drivers approach the construction zone.

Friday afternoon, traffic was snarled through the downtown area as drivers try to get used to the detours and by some who  got caught in traffic, unaware of the project.
