Hancock Airport Unveils $60M Makeover and New Central Security Checkpoint

(Syracuse, NY) – A $60 million dollar renovation project at Hancock International Airport is now completed after two years.  Mayor Stephanie A. Miner announces that the new central passenger screening checkpoint at Syracuse Hancock International Airport is scheduled to open on Wednesday, May 15.  The key feature of the Passenger Terminal Security and Access Improvement Project, which began in August 2011, will process all outbound passengers and will replace the current two-checkpoint system.  Mayor Miner was joined by other elected officials, construction workers, leaders in the business community, and airport staff for a ribbon cutting at the new  terminal at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 14.

“This is the most important reconstruction project our airport has undergone since it first opened,” said Mayor Miner.  “The new, LEED designed center terminal and second floor central checkpoint will provide the traveling public with access to the newest screening equipment, four security lanes in one central area, lanes designated for the more experienced business traveler, and new features and amenities, including a Café Kubal location just inside the new checkpoint.”

This sustainably designed project features a 147,000 square foot addition that connects the two concourses of the terminal building on the second level, both pre- and post- passenger security screening checkpoints.  The $60 million project has been funded entirely with Passenger Facility Charges, and a $6 million grant from the Transportation Security Administration.  No cost to taxpayers, airlines or other tenants.

Aviation Commissioner Christina Callahan expects travelers to be impressed by express security lanes and new TSA screening equipment that speeds up the security process. Callahan also says glass walls will provide passengers with expansive views. After clearing security, travelers can relax in rocking chairs and other comfortable seating. Voluntary airport ambassadors will assist passengers and there will new concessions.
