Flu Death Reported In Madison County

Madison County Department of Health announced today its first flu death for the 2013-14 flu season in a middle-aged adult. The individual had the H1N1 flu, was unvaccinated, and had an underlying health condition that led to more serious complications from the flu.

“The H1N1 flu is the predominant flu strain circulating this year,” said Cheryl Geiler, Madison County Health Department’s Director of Community Health. “We continue to strongly encourage children, young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults to get the flu vaccine to protect themselves, especially if they have an underlying medical condition.”

This is the first death from the flu in Madison County this season. There have already been three deaths confirmed from the flu in Onondaga County. The victims in each case had underlying medical conditions.

Obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and asthma are common underlying medical conditions in patients hospitalized for the flu.
