Cold Closes, Delays Schools Across CNY

Albany, N.Y. - Schools from the Finger Lakes region to the Canadian border in northern New York are closed or delaying the start of classes because of temperatures that have plunged to as low as minus-32 in some upstate areas.

Most of the closings and two-hour delays are in central New York and the North Country, where the National Weather Service says it's 32 below Wednesday morning in Watertown. In Massena, on the St. Lawrence River, it's minus-29, while Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks is at 28 below. With the wind, it feels like minus-40 in some northern areas.

The weather service has issued wind chill advisories and warnings for much of the upstate region from Buffalo to the New England states.

Forecasters say the deep freeze will linger through Friday, with temperatures rising into the 20s Saturday.
